Carrier bases and oils

Carrier oils are the foundation of any bath and massage blend. While the essential oils mixed within the blend have the most active properties, the carrier bases have their own therapeutic value. Also referred to as base oils or fixed oils, they are derived from the flesh, kernels and seeds of various plants.

Carrier oils serve many purposes. Since many essential oils are irritating to the skin if used directly, base oils serve to dilute the essential oil blend to a proportion safe for skin care. The small molecules which make up these oils help transport the volatile essences of the essential oils through the skin and into the bloodstream. They also allow a massage therapist to maintain close contact with the skin without creating friction and uncomfortable heat.

Carrier oils are largely comprised of essential fatty acids and contain fat-soluble vitamins like A, D and E. They are easily absorbed into the skin, and many contain other healing properties in addition to the vitamins already listed. There is a fixed oil suitable for each skin type. If you browse through the custom bath and massage blends in our web store, you will notice that we use several different types of carrier oils.

Besides the fixed oils used in bath and massage blends, there are several other ingredients commonly used in our skin care lines. These gels, waxes and butters are natural substances derived from various fruits, plants and other sources that serve to bind the essential oils and to soften and moisturize the skin.

While all of the products that we make ourselves contain only natural ingredients, we do use cosmetic bases for some of our blends, such as lotions, shower gels, shampoos and conditioners. Much research went into finding bases that were as free of chemical synthetics, fragrances and dyes as possible. Based on feedback from our customers, we feel that we have definitely succeeded.

In order to provide a product that is similar in texture and use as commercially prepared skin products, however, there are still certain ingredients such as lathering components and thickeners that may cause skin sensitivity in some people. Even natural ingredients can cause allergic reactions.

A final word of caution regarding base oils. Many fixed oils are derived from various kinds of nuts. If you have an allergy to nuts, be very careful about choosing an oil blend. Since our bath and massage oils are custom blended, we will be happy to substitute a different carrier oil if necessary. Your health is our primary concern.
